Sex-Positive Feminists Talking About Porn and Sex Work

The always-fabulous Maymay shared this video made by a group of sex-positive feminists discussing their views on porn, sex work, sexual autonomy and the ongoing conversations debates fights with anti-porn feminists. I can’t say it better than they did, so click on the link and see for yourself. And pass it on.

I really enjoyed this video. As part of my MPH coursework, I recently took a class on sex work and it was absolutely fascinating to me to see how many positive outcomes arise from a legalised (or decriminalised) sex work framework. In Victoria, Australia (where sex work is legalised), rates of STIs are significantly lower among sex workers than in the general population, due to mandatory safe sex practices and regular STI testing. Police officers in Melbourne are given training to de-stigmatise the industry. There is still stigma attached to being a sex worker, but the overall working conditions are generally far superior to those in an illegal framework. Prohibition of sex work only creates more harm toward the women and men in the industry. Feminists should be working to reduce harm, not dictate morality.
