Call for Participants: Research on Women’s Experiences of Porn

This seems to the the day for me to get requests for research participants. A former student of mine is gearing up for her dissertation and she’s looking for women who watch or read sexually explicit media to take a survey. Here’s the info:

Are You a Woman Who Views, Reads, or Listens to Pornography, Erotica, Romance Novels, and/or any other Sexually Explicit Materials?

If so, please share your experiences!

Complete a Short Survey (30 min or less) and Contribute to a Scholarly Understanding of Women’s Experiences with Sexually Explicit Materials

My name is Kari Hempel and I am a female psychology graduate student who is doing my dissertation research on women’s experiences with sexually explicit materials. For too long women’s real experiences with these materials have been ignored. My goal is not to judge anyone’s experiences, but to accumulate surveys from as many women as possible around the country about their positive, negative, and/or mixed experiences with sexually explicit materials, and to present the differences and commonalities in a scholarly, respectful fashion.

Your Participation is Completely Confidential

Any identifying information that is asked for in the completion of this study will be kept completely confidential and will be destroyed once the study is complete.

You Qualify for Participation If:

  • You currently view, read, or listen to any written, audio, visual, or audio-visual material that is sexually explicit (including but not limited to films, magazines, novels, and audio-recordings)
  • You currently live in the United States

Woo! Makes me think of that XKCD strip about women liking porn where people actually FUCK.

Speaking as someone female-bodied who has a favorite (male) porn star, I find the way the industry is largely aimed at the straight male gaze REALLY ANNOYING. I hate finding a photo gallery with his name on it and then only being able to tell he’s in the pix cos I know what his cock looks like. Ffffffft. Pix of the gal gurning for the camera while he’s hidden behind her or largely out of frame = not interesting to me.

    Pet peeve, clearly.

Anyway: did the survey, spreading the word!

I am taking the survey now. In the education level question, you left out “bachelor’s degree” as an option.

  3. Will definitely take the survey – I’ll be interested to see your results, would love to talk with you about it, as someone who not only reads but writes explicit erotic romance (well, and someone who views porn, but especially by women for women).

  4. Charlie says:

Just to be clear, this isn’t my research. I’m just passing the call for participants along.

  5. Nurture says:

This could have been interesting to complete. Unfortunately, I don’t live in the US so I don’t qualify. However, I will pass this along to my online buddies.

  6. Lynn says:

Appreciate your efforts to gather women’s perspectives on the topic. The design of the questions, tho, seemed to repeatedly reflect an assumed belief by the surveyor that “sexually explicit materials” might have such effects on our world so as to be the “devil’s work”. I submit that the “materials” are not so much the issue of concern as certain specific attitudes expressed within them. Their proliferation is accomplished using many other vehicles that we don’t question in this same way.

  7. […] Glickman is doing a survey on women’s experiences of pornography. A few more details are here in Dr. Glickman’s post, but the main info is this: Are You a Woman Who Views, Reads, or Listens to Pornography, Erotica, […]
