this is why we need marriage equality
According to the Bay Area Reporter, a Congressional bill has been reintroduced to enable queer US citizens to sponsor their non-citizen partners for legal residency. Just like folks in m/f marriages can.
It seems that the proposed law will add the words “permanent partner” to those qualified to seek such residency. Permanent partner is defined as an adult who is in a committed, intimate, financially interdependent relationship with another adult in “which both parties intend a lifelong commitment.” Doesn’t that sound a lot like marriage to you?
The fact that there needs to be an additional law to create a measure of equality for same-sex couples is why we need marriage equality in the first place!

Dear Dr. Charlie Glickman,
Thank you so much for writing about the Permanent Partners Immigration Act – a bill that would allow me to sponsor my same sex partner for immigration to the US. I was born in the US and had the joy of living in San Francisco for 17 years. I’ve been forced to live in exile for the past 2 years in order to be with my partner. I’ve left a family of friends, aging parents, a home I own, and a career that was best appreciated in San Francisco – (many of my photos are on the covers of the books carried by Good Vibrations). I Just thought I would write because I feel very much a part of the Good Vibrations community, and my partner and I would love to return if the US ever decides to provide the same civil rights to it’s gay citizens that 14 other countries now provide – the right to live with the person you fall in love with even if you have the audacity to fall in love with somebody from another country.
Senator Dianne Feinstein has yet to support this bill. It has been introduced 6 times previously.
I hope to meet you in person someday!
