It might be a couple of months until National Masturbation Month (more commonly known as “May”), but Shilo McCabe is working on an amazing piece as part of the The Sex Positive Photo Project. She’s looking for people to photograph as part of an ambitious goal to produce one image for every day of the month. If you’re in the San Francisco area and would like to participate, see below for details. And pass it on- she doesn’t have a lot of time.
Note: Shilo has given me permission to use the photos in this post. They don’t feature masturbation, but they’re gorgeous and they’ll give you a sense of her skill and style. Click on them for the full size version.
Masturbation is natural. It can be a vehicle to explore our spiritual selves, and a soothing balm for many ills. Masturbation is part of a healthy lifestyle and great therapy! It is an intimate and powerful way to show yourself unconditional love. Loving yourself is a way to reinforce the idea that you are worthy of love and is a way to remind you that you are capable of loving others.
As a part of The Sex Positive Photo Project I want to celebrate National Masturbation Month with a daily photo gallery of people masturbating, along with some text from them that completes the statement “I masturbate…”.The idea is to create a sex-positive celebration of masturbation for the entire month of May.
I need a minimum of 31 people for this – and I’ll need to shoot most of them in March and April in order to meet this audacious goal. The images I take, though obviously sexual in nature will not necessarily be explicit – it will probably vary based on what each person does, each person’s individual vibe (pun intended) and energy. I want to photograph people masturbating – not for *me* but for *themselves*. I want them to allow me to watch and do the voodoo that I do with my camera to capture the energy of that moment.
I deeply respect the immense trust the someone puts into a photographer when they decide to step in front of the camera. One of the things that I like to do to honor that trust is that I don’t ask for a model release until they can approve the final images – this is especially true for people who are not used to being photographed. I want them to feel that they can trust me and that they have the freedom to be explore and experiment, knowing they will be able to approve the final photos.
Time is of the essence, so if you or someone you love is interested, please contact me asap shilo@shilomccabe.com or at The Sex Positive Photo Project blog.

would love to participate! but unfortunately it isnt in Malaysia. 🙁 anyway good luck! your project sounds GREAT! 😀
Just for the record, this isn’t my project- I’m just passing the info along.
Elle, don’t worry about it. I am meeting with her today and we shall see what comes of it. I am nervous as hell to participate, but I figure you only live once so might as well try as many things as you can as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone.
I absolutely enjoy the beautiful and natural act of masturbating, both alone and with a partner. I would love to have some tasteful and artistic photos taken of me while masturbating. I wish I was in the San Francisco area! I will be looking for the photos of those who are able to participate!
Can I send in pictures and/or video?
You’ll have to contact Shilo at her site and ask. I was just passing the info along.
